Innovative insurance for Kenyan farmers
A Kenyan microfinancing scheme is set to expand its insurance policy to include not just inputs, but also harvests for local farmers, reported Irinnews.org.
The Kilimo Salama Plus initiative, launched by UAP Insurance, the Syngenta Foundation and mobile phone company Safaricom in 2009, has announced it will expand its cover and scope.
Syngenta Foundation Marco Ferroni told the website the group hoped to expand its number of insured farmers from 12,000 to 50,000.
The initiative allows farmers to use mobile phone technology and automated weather stations to take out insurance when making transactions.
