Kenyan avocado exporter faces outcry over access road
A Kenyan avocado, pineapple and tea exporter could face forceful land acquisition if it doesn’t come to agreement with authorities over road construction on its land, the Nairobi Star reported.
Kakuzi Ltd is leasing land in the area of Kangangu, where residents have demanded a road to access the township of Makuyu to cut travelling distance from 17km (10.56 miles) to 2.7km (1.68 miles), the story reported.
Locals have threatened to forcefully take the land if the government is not able to negotiate with Kakuzi’s management.
Local MP Elius Mbau told the newspaper the farm’s management were reluctant to hand over part of the land due to security concerns.
“I have already tabled the matter before Parliament requesting the Ministry of Lands to look into the matter in the wake of rising tension from the affected residents who now wants to use violence to have the access road,” Mbau was quoted as saying.
