Peru's mango growers struggle to meet U.S. food safety demands
The Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM) claims only 40% of exporters in the Piura region comply with new U.S. food safety laws, website Andina.com reported.
APEM manager Juan Carlos Rivera said growers and exporters still had until November 2012 to pick up their act to meet the new standards of the Food Safety Modernization Act, the story reported.
"In Piura there are 14,500 producers who grow mangoes over 22,000 hectares that must meet the standards," Rivera was quoted as saying.
He said EMPA partners had to adapt production and packing to meet GLOBALG.A.P standards and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification, the story reported.
