Peru is looking to sell more pomegranates and figs in the European Union, the U.S. following a recent study by the country's export commission, website Agraria.pe reported.

The commission's director Alvaro Gálvez told the website Peru had tapped around 0.7% of the European pomegranate market, while the country's total exports of the fruit worldwide were 1,800 metric tons (MT) in 2010.

Gálvez highlighted the benefits of zero tariff levels for Peruvian pomegranates in the European Union while the supply was also counterseasonal, with exporters looking to target the key markets of Spain, Germany, France and the U.K., the story reported.

In terms of figs, the U.S. is the world's third-largest importer of the fruit with a demand of around 5,000 metric tons (MT) per year, while Peru already has approval to export dried figs to the North American country. In 2009 Peru exported around 28 metric tons (MT) of dried figs to the U.S.

The study also included a summary of Peru's potential to export anchovies to South Korea.
