Australian disasters hit tomato exports to NZ
Disasters in Australia have led to a lower tomato supply for the New Zealand market, with one retailer expecting prices to rise 30%, website Nzherald.co.nz reported.
Horticulture NZ chief executive Peter Silcock told the website that floods and storms in the Australian state of Queensland were a major cause for the shortage.
"There's usually quite a bit of product imported into New Zealand. At the moment these imports are not occurring because of shortages in Australia," he was quoted as saying.
The story reported a reliance on Australian imports meant New Zealand growers had been cultivating fewer tomatoes in recent years, while local greenhouse growers were also affected by poor weather.
