Costa Rica's banana exporters face Chinese challenges
Costa Rica's banana exports to China fell 3.85% year-on-year last month due to high transport costs and increased competition with the Philippines, website Prensa-latina.cu reported.
The country's Foreign Trade Promoter (Promer) said banana exports to the Asian nation fell from US$311 million to US$299, with a volume of 797,471 metric tons (MT).
This amount represents a decline in volumes of 29,797MT with a price lower than US$375 per MT.
Costa Rica's exporters are hoping China will opt to diversify its banana supply to include more products from Costa Rica when the countries' free trade agreement (FTA) comes into affect, the story reported.
