US$300M investment touted for Peruvian port development
The mayors of Peru's Circuita Mochica zone will launch a public awareness campaign about the benefits of a new National Port Development Plan (PNDP) on Aug. 25, website Agraria.pe reported.
Puerto Eten mayor Jaime Contreras Rivas said the Maritime Terminal of Puerto Eden (TMPE) would bolster Lambayeque's regional agricultural exports and fishing, the story reported.
He told the website the project would generate around 50,000 well-paid jobs, while in the construction period alone the terminal would attract US$300 million in investment.
Once it is built the port would cut freight costs and delivery times, leading to a 'virtuous cycle' for farming- and fishing-based goods, the story reported.
"We have agriculture, fishing and mining areas, and our proximity to Olmos is more than substantial to us, and I don't have to mention the high rate of growth that Lambayeque's exports have had in recent years, so I think it's something right and above all beneficial not only for Eten, but for Peru," Contreras Rivas was quoted as saying.
"I'm sure the social impact would be enormous, and I don't think the Congress or the Executive have a problem in approving a project of this magnitude."
