Chilean blueberry harvest kicks off
Chilean fruit company Vital Berry has started blueberry harvesting in the northern zones of Ovalle and Tilama in the country's IV (Coquimbo) region.
Collections began last week and are expected to continue until week 50 in productive zones from Santiago to the north.
Vital Berry Marketing sales manager Felipe Juillerat has told www.freshfruitportal.com the harvest began with the O'Neill and Misty varieties, and will continue later with Star, Emerald and Jewel blueberries.
"The fruit meets requirements of quality, size, sweetness and tolerance to defects," he says.
"In terms of the conditions we have seen the harvest start without problems. The fruit we're seeing is healthy."
The company forecasts exports of 600-700 metric tons (MT) from Chile's early production zones.
