Argentina: Mendoza dedicates more land to veggie plantations

Vegetable plantation area in the Argentine province of Mendoza grew 13% year-on-year in 2010-11, according to a report by the Institute of Rural Development.

The report found total plantation area grew 4,332 hectares to 36,825 ha, with 72% of production in the province's central zone and Uco Valley.

Almost one third of the area was dedicated to garlic with 11,551 ha, while the second-most important vegetable was potatoes at 7,125 ha.

Other significant horticultural plantations included carrots (3,139ha), industrial tomatoes (2,446ha), pumpkins (3,680ha), onions (1,661ha), oregano (1,112ha) and lettuce (976ha).

In terms of conventional fruits, the report also noted there were 596ha of melons in the province, which is also renowned for its wine grapes, stonefruit and pome fruit.
