The Peruvian Government is hopeful the country's first blueberry shipments will be exported in September this year from the regions of Arequipa and Ancash, website Andina.com.pe reported.

Sierra Exportadora (Siex) president Alfonso Velásquez said the expected shipment was an example of the benefits growers could gain from working with the crop.

He said the blueberries came from around 50,000 hectares of land that could produce around 500kg (1,100lbs) of the fruit, the story reported.

While the first shipments won't be coming from Siex, the company has slated berry plantation as one of its main productive programs, with the final goal of export.

"In September and October, blueberry prices range between US$10-30/kg, and it is just in those two months that Peru can export the fruit," Velásquez was quoted as saying.

Promoting regonal berry growth

The regional government of Lambayeque in northern Peru is encouraging the plantation of several berry types through a public-private venture, the website reported.

The initiative forms part of 'Perú Berries' project, and has been undertaken by government venture Sierra Exportadora, the regional government, the district government and private company Fundo Cerro Dos Cabezas.

The initiative will promote the cultivation of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cherries and blackberries.

Productive development manager Miguel Verona Velásquez, told the website that work visits had been made to the Incahuasi district to identify potential planting areas.

"Berry production is an economic alternative and an Andean social inclusion tool. The purpose is to supply the local and national markets with views to export," Velásquez was quoted as saying.

"The idea is to export these products of high profitability and great demand in the world market for their nutritional value and delicious taste."

It is estimated the initiative will need an investment of US$40,000 per hectare, which includes seedlings, modern irrigation systems and technical assistance.

El proyecto incluye la siembra de arándano, frambuesa, cereza, fresa, mora, aguaymanto, entre otros, los cuales tienen cotizaciones importantes en el mercado internacional. Señaló que para la siembra de berries se requiere de una inversión de 36,000 dólares para producir una hectárea de arándano y la producción esperada es no menos de 10,000 kilos. “En setiembre y octubre los precios del arándano oscilan entre diez y 30 dólares el kilo y son justamente los meses en que Perú puede exportar ese fruto”, señaló.
