Peru's processed asparagus exports soar in 2011

Peru's frozen and canned asparagus exports jumped by 55% and 30% respectively last year, website Agraria.pe.com reported.

Customs statistics prepared by Agrodata showed frozen shipments reached US$46.4 million with the average price showing a 22% year-on-year increase to US$3.28 per kilogram.

U.S. imports showed a 46% year-on-year rise to US$23.2 million,while shipments to Japan rose 172% to US$7.9 million and Italy doubled its purchases to US$4.1 million.

IQF del Perú accounted for 53% of frozen exports with Camposol and Agrícola La Joya each accounting for 8%.

Canned exports

Canned asparagus exports reached US$137 million with prices at US$2.38 per kilo, representing a 16% year-on-year rise.

Spain was the largest importer at US$40 million, followed by France at US$39 million and the U.S. at US$28 million.

Sociedad Agrícola Virú accounted for 29% of all exports at US$39.6 million, followed by Camposol at 24% exporting US$32.7 million, and Danper Trujillo at 19% exporting US$ 26.3 million.

Fresh

Fresh asparagus exports fell 1% to US$289 million at an average price of US$2.34 per kilo.

The U.S. was the largest importer accounting for 61% of exports at US$176 million followed by the Netherlands at 13% purchasing US$38.2 million and then England at 8% buying US$23 million.

Complejo Agroindustrial Beta was the largest exporter with US$ 33.8 million sales, followed by J&P Agroexportaciones at US$ 20.9 million, Sociedad Agrícola Drokasa at US$ 17.2 million and Danper Trujillo at US$ 16.4 million.
