Peru's table grape shipments climb but prices stay flat

Peru's table grape export saw a 20% year-on-year rise this season but prices were depressed, website Connuestroperu.com reported.

The Peruvian Association of Table Grape Producers said the industry registered sales of US$250 miilion from October last year to February, 2012.

President Alejandro Fuentes said production registered a 41% year-on-year rise in volumes reaching 128,000 metric tons (MT).

"The prices per kilogram of grapes have been lower than those recorded in the previous two years," he was quoted as saying.

He said the season was not as good as originally expected, partly because rival countries such as Brazil, Chile, South Africa and the U.S. had not experienced any significant climatic problems.

Fuentes said the U.S. remained the main destination taking 28,000MT, followed by China with 22,000MT and Europe in third place with 18,500MT.

He stressed that although China had pushed Europe into third place the Continent had increased its grape imports this season by 35%.

Other significant markets included Russia, Indonesia and England.
