NZ records rise in unwanted and expired chemical collection
New Zealand non-profit Agrecovery Foundation has increased its collections of unwanted or expired chemicals from farms and orchards in the past year, broadcaster Radio New Zealand reported.
Marketing manager Duncan Scotland told Radio NZ the chemical intake had risen 23% year-on-year to 11,600kg (25,520lbs); a 'fantastic' result as otherwise they would have been still sitting in people's sheds or disposed of inappropriately.
He said the foundation could could dispose of chemicals in the correct manner, whether it's in New Zealand or overseas, and was looking for further growth in the program over the next 12 months.
He added the foundation's team had seen chemicals stored in all sorts of places, from old chest freezers to buckets and open drums.
