Market situation in the Northern Hemisphere, week 14 – 2013 (April 5)

In North America, an active and stable market was registered for local and imported apples in the U.S.
In Latin America, late arrivals put the Colombian market under pressure. Price adjustments were seen for Royal Galas while rapid sales were seen for red apples.
In Europe, moderate movement was recorded for overseas supply. In the U.K., the first sales of Argentine Royal Galas were registered with slow movement.
In Asia, there was low interest for imported apples.
Avocados
In North America, sales activity was moderate in the U.S. with high market volume.
In Europe, overseas arrivals increased, mainly with the Fuerte variety from South Africa. High prices and strong sales were reported on the continent and in the U.K. For the Hass variety, the market was supplied by supply from Spain and Israel.
Blueberries
In North America, the Chilean season was in its final stage in the U.S. with the fruit showing weak condition. However, lots with no issues received stable prices.
In Europe, the Chilean season was finished with insufficient volumes to establish a market.
Citrus
In North America, the U.S. market was supplied by the domestic offering.
In Europe, Southern Hemisphere easy peeler volumes increased with the first sales of imported Satsumas registered on the continent and in the U.K. In Russia, arrival volume was expected to rise in the following week with enough to establish a market.
In Asia, the supply was mainly from U.S. oranges but some arrivals of Argentine easy peelers had been reported, although with low volumes.
Grapes
In North America, U.S. importers showed concern about the Chilean port strike's affects on seedless grape departures, preventing arrivals before the Marketing Order on April 10.
In Latin America, market pressures were seen for Red Globes in Colombia while sales rates in Brazil were adequate.
In Europe, cold weather hurt grape sales both on the continent and in the U.K. In Russia, sales were moderate for Chilean Red Globe grapes.
In Asia, the market was active with fewer arrivals from Peru and South Africa.
Kiwifruit
In North America, Chilean kiwifruit sales began in the U.S., while traders were concerned about the South American country's port strikes.
In Latin America, prices followed a downward trend in Colombia while the first sales of Chilean kiwifruit were reported in Brazil, with good activity.
In Europe, the market was supplied by local supply although arrivals from Chile had been recorded, but with insufficient volumes to establish a price trend.
In Asia, the market was still waiting for the start of the Southern Hemisphere season.
Pears
In North America, local pear stocks remained low in the U.S. compared to last year, leading to good prospects for imported pears.
In Latin America, price adjustments were reported in Colombia and Brazil.
In Europe, price adjustments were seen for pears with russeting, while no significant changes were seen for green varieties. In the U.K., there was a receptive market for overseas supply. In Russia, moderate movement was registered for Argentine Williams pears, while the Abate Fetel variety had the best activity.
Stonefruit
In North America, the Chilean peach season was ending while plums were still showing some issues with condition. Stable prices were seen for fruit in general.
In Latin America, good sales activity was shown for plums in Brazil and Colombia, while peaches and nectarines had condition problems and slow sales.
In Europe, the plum market was under pressure due to high volumes and slow sales, further affected by cold weather. In the U.K., the plum market was also depressed.
In Asia, volume was down for Australian supply while Chilean plums and nectarines dominated the market.
