Austria: first direct mango shipment arrives from the Philippines
Austria received its first shipment of mangoes flown directly from the Philippines this month, the Filipino Department of Public Affairs reported.
The arrival marks the first direct shipment of the product into Austria, bypassing indirect distribution centers that impede competitive pricing.
The Philippine Embassy in Vienna worked with Austrian importer Maharlika Reisevermittlung GmbH to bring in the first air shipment, which sold out in a reported 48 hours. The fruit was marketed in hotels and restaurants in Vienna and the Slovakian capital, Bratislava. Samples were also given to AGROKOR-KONZUM, a major food distributor in the greater Balkan region.
About half of the shipment went to buyers outside of Vienna.
The fruit was also promoted by consulates in Croatia and Slovakia.
Maharlika Reisevermittlung GmbH is now working to import more fresh fruit directly from the Philippines. Other mango-related products are also under consideration, including mango puree, mango jam and preserved mangoes. The Philippine Embassy hopes to expand into more mainstream markets such as grocery stores and outlets.
