Bananas lead imports in South Korea

Bananas topped the list of most consumed imported fruit in South Korea for the tenth consecutive year, according to the Korea Customs Service. banana_ffp2

At 368,000 tons (MT), bananas made up a reported 48.7% of total fruit imports in 2012. The fruit was followed by oranges at 174,000 MT, pineapples at 73,000 MT, grapes at 59,000 MT and kiwifruit at 29,000 MT, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Almost all, 98.7%, of the banana imports in 2012 came from the Philippines.

Oranges were dominated by a 96% share from the United States and grapes were led by Chile with 79.9% of imports.

New Zealand represented 69.9% of kiwifruit.

Overall in 2012, South Korea imported 754,000 MT of fruit worth US$1.1 billion.
