Red spot impacts Peruvian organic banana volume

Peru's organic banana producers can expect a 15% decrease in fruit sent to market, in part due to a red spot outbreak that has hit plantations.banana_56870893 small

Although the disease does not affect overall production, it does affect which fruit can be exported explained Luis Ruiz Medina, president of Piura Center for Small Organic Banana Grower Associations (CEPIBO).

Red spot is caused by the insect Chaetanophothrips orchidii, which clusters in bunches and causes reddish abrasions.

Ruiz said field work is being done and that control measures are being implemented to prevent the disease.

"We are supporting the crops and the [agriculture] minister is walking the fields. They are considering spending around PEN18 million [US$6.5 million] for research," he told www.freshfruitportal.com.

Ruiz said the situation was under control and that recovery should be expected in February.

"By lowering cases and controlling the situation, production remains stable," he said.
