Giumarra introduces line of fair trade squash
U.S.-based fresh produce company Giumarra will be adding a variety of fair trade certified squash options to its lineup from November the March.
Grown in Mexico, the produce will include USDA Certified Organic and conventional acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash.
Giumarra Nogales division manager Gil Munguia said the company expected increased retailer interest in fair trade products, given growing consumer demand for the category.
Other fair trade products from Giumarra include United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Organic and conventional bell peppers, cucumbers, seedless and mini-seedless watermelons, cantaloupes, roma tomatoes and grape tomatoes.
All of Giumarra's fair trade certified products come from Mexico, the nation with the greatest reported category growth under Fair Trade USA.
Part of Giumarra's premiums from fair trade sales go to farm worker committees in southern Mexico to build infrastructure and support community development.
