Aussie blueberry growers need urgent protocol support

The Australian Blueberry Growers Association (ABGA) has 50-page "ambitious export strategy" aimed at building demand overseas, media group the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported. blueberries_56671291 sq

Association president Greg McCulloch told the ABC local growers were facing oversupply issues in the early part of the season, and would be in an "awful lot of pain" if protocols were not secured with export destination markets.

"Our industry has grown to an extent, out of our northern growing regions in Australia, that we're facing an oversupply problem and we have to open our export markets," McCulloch was quoted as saying.

"We've known that this was coming for some time."

He told the broadcaster the industry could end up producing 10,000 metric tons (MT) next season, and wanted the government to try and open up markets like Japan, China, New Zealand and Taiwan.

On a more positive note, he said it looked like Australian blueberry farmers were on the verge of getting access to India.
