Brazilian papaya export volume up by almost one-fifth
Brazilian papaya exporters hope are hoping to close out this month on an upward trend, after foreign trade statistics for May showed an 18% year-on-year rise in volume to 16,500 metric tons (MT).
The publication Hortifruti Brasil reported lower consumption at home had prompted a greater export focus, backed by stronger demand in Europe due to high temperatures.
However, the spike in volume was not matched by income in dollars, which fell 7% to US$18.6 million, mainly the result of currency depreciation.
The story reported Europe purchased 91% of Brazil's papaya exports for the period, with Portugal and the Netherlands as the main destination markets.
Elsewhere, shippers have sent "good volumes" to the UAE and Uruguay with growth of 372% and 19% respectively year-on-year over the first five months of 2015.
