The Produce Marketing Association's PMA Fruittrade Latin America event will be held in the capital Santiago on Nov. 11 and 12, and will see major players from the global horticultural industry come together.

Grower bodies Chilean Walnut Commission and Chile Prunes will have a strong presence at the event, with their own pavilion dedicated to the produce.

During the event, attendees will also be able to participate in a number of technical sessions on the dried fruit and tree nut industries - including walnuts, almonds, raisins and hazelnuts - during which an industry outlook will be provided.

Chilean Walnut Commission president and Chile Prunes vice presidente, Andrés Rodríguez, told www.freshfruitportal.com the sectors had been experiencing strong growth in the South American country.

"In the year 2013 revenues in our sector were US$850 million, and this year we should get close to the US$1 billion mark," he said.

He said the most important produce items in the categories were walnuts and dehydrated prunes, with Chile being the third-largest walnut exporter in the world.

"Just as has been the case with fresh fruit, we want to use this platform to increase the commercial reach of tree nuts and dried fruits, and to do this we are working with our members and with the PMA," he said.

RodrĂguez added that a number of important regional supermarket chains and importers involved with tree nuts and dried fruits would be attending PMA Fruittrade Latin America.

"The trade show, which traditionally has been focused on fresh fruit, is also aiming to become an excellent place for the tree nut and dried fruit sectors to do business," he said.

"The event, the second international version, has transformed itself into a horticultural platform for the region with buyers from all over the world."
