Russia dumps more EU fruit in landfills
Russia's clampdown on the gray trade of prohibited produce imports continues, with the seizure and destruction of 19.5MT of Polish apples last week.
The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) said it intercepted the fruit in the Orenburg region, near the Kazkhstan border, on Jan. 22.
The agency said the 1,500 boxes of fruit did not have the right phytosanitary certificates, with packaging, pallets and markings indicating their source of origin was Poland.
The seizure marks the second of the year for Polish produce after 250kg of the country's mushrooms were destroyed on Jan. 14, while 2.4MT of Belgian pears have also been destroyed along with 338.4kg of Turkish tomatoes.
