Brussels' main wholesale market closed down in wake of terror attacks

The Mabru wholesale market in Brussels closed earlier today in the wake of the terror attacks on the Belgian capital's airport and metro systems.

Now traders have an anxious wait to see if it will reopen for business tomorrow morning (March 23).

"We all had to get out, the whole place was shut down shortly after the explosions earlier this morning and since then the market has been taken over by security people," a spokesman tells www.freshfruitportal.com.

"There is no one allowed to come in or out and right now I have to get out of here fast.

"No one knows exactly what is going on. It’s a terrible day for Brussels and everyone is extremely anxious right now."

Today (March 22) began as usual at 4am when the wholesale market opened its doors to the city’s traders and food service industry who regularly fill up their fruit and vegetable stocks.

Having been a high-profile market in Brussels for more than 100 years, Mabru accommodates approximately 150 traders selling local fruit and vegetables as well as produce from all over the world.

The Mabru spokesman added that more information may come through later this evening, but he was not clear when the market will reopen.

At the time of writing, reports state 31 people have now died and many more remain seriously injured following explosions at Maelbeek metro station and Brussels international airport.
