California port announces apps aimed at efficiency

California's Port of Oakland introduced two smart phone applications this week that are expected to improve predictability of wait times.

The DrayQ™ and DrayLink™ apps use Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS technology to provide a calculation of harbor truck turn times. The data will estimate wait times to enter marine terminal gates and how long transactions will take.

Reston, Virginia-based Leidos was entrusted with licensing, deployment, and maintenance of the apps, which required installation of wireless technology throughout the port.

Port of Oakland Executive Director Chris Lytle described the apps as the industry's most precise tool of its kind.

“This takes the myth out of measurement and gives us a window into port performance,” Lytle said in a press release.

The technology is expected to help drivers plan around peak periods of terminal activity. The port itself will be able to employ the apps to follow real-time data and identify areas of need.

Taso Zografos of Leidos said the programs are available through the Apple and Google app stores.
