Raspberry health studies take center stage

Researchers extolled raspberries for their health benefits this week at the 2016 Experimental Biology Conference in San Diego, California.

Six animal-based studies, all conducted in at U.S. universities, were presented at the conference, taking place April 2-6, providing a glimpse into the world of raspberry health research, said said Tom Krugman, executive director of the National Processed Raspberry Council.

“The new research being presented at Experimental Biology contributes to the growing body of nutrition research around the potential role of red raspberries in helping to reduce the risk factors associated with metabolically-based chronic diseases,” Krugman said in a press release.

“While further research in humans is needed, these animal studies provide important insights that will drive future research.”

Presenters lauded the benefits for cardiovascular health, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, liver function, and inflammation and bone health.

The National Processed Raspberry Council pointed to vitamin C, fiber, ellagitannins and anthocyanins as some of the nutrients behind the value of raspberries.

Raspberry researchers at the conference hailed from the University of Michigan, Oregon State University, Washington State University, Texas A&M University, and Texas Woman’s University.
