HK group to launch Aussie mango import deal in Indonesia
Hong Kong-based farm management company Plantations International has set up an Indonesian subsidiary for the purpose of importing Australian mangoes.
In a release, Plantations International communications director Marvin Lee said the operation was set up due to strong consumer demand that was outstripping supply.
Lee said Indonesia was shaping up as a huge export market for Australian mangoes this year.
Australia regained access to the Indonesian market last year after an absence due to regulatory changes, which led to the formation of a new protocol to mitigate risks from fruit fly and seed weevil.
Gowers wishing to export to the market can choose between three treatment options: irradiation, vapor heat treatment or fumigation.
Lee highlighted the company would be importing Kensington Pride mangoes, which are grown predominantly in the Northern Territory and northern and central Queensland, providing early September to November and late season December to February mangoes respectively.
Some late-season fruit are from the remote Kununurra region in Western Australia.
The Australian Mango Industry Association (AMIA) has set a target of exporting 20% of the national crop by 2020.
