Ecuadorian mango exports set for another rise

Ecuador's mango volumes are expected to continue along their steady growth path this coming season, with the industry projected to export 12 million 4-kilo-equivalent boxes. mangos_31749412

Ecuadorian Mango Foundation director Bernado Malo told website Eltelegrafo.com.ec the 2016-17 campaign had been boosted by ideal growing conditions and the early end to the winter.

The export season is due to get underway on Sept. 20, according to the representative.

"We are expecting an abundant harvest, but that is not necessarily ideal for the grower, as just like everything in life it's a question of supply and demand," he was quoted as saying.

"In any case, we're optimists, especially knowing that this is a business that changes every year, and there are permanent challenges."

According to the organization, some 11.4 million boxes were produced during the last campaign, and 10.7 million for the 2014-15 deal. Exports have increased 17% over a five-year period.

Around 85% is shipped to the U.S., with the rest sent to Canada, Mexico and Europe. Last year's exports reportedly brought in revenues of between US$40-42 million.

Malo welcomed the recently lowered tariffs for shipping into the U.S., thanking the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Mango Board (NMB).
