South Korea's fruit import volumes hit new record in 2016
South Korea's total fruit imports rose 4% last year to set a new record of 863,660 MT (metric tons), according to publication Foods 1.
The story cited data from South Korean customs, which showed imports had more than doubled more 350,000MT in 2000 to 840,000MT in 2012.
In 2016, avocados saw the biggest rate of growth of all the fruits, with a 92% year-on-year rise to more than 2,900MT. Orange imports also increased 395 to 154,900MT.
Kiwifruit, pineapples, melons and durians also saw significant growth, according to the publication.
The Philippines is the main exporter of fruit to South Korea, with a 44% share of the country's import market. The U.S. is second with a 28% share.
