Camposol Q2 profit surges on the back of avocado growth
The Peruvian multinational's avocado revenues more than doubled year-on-year in the second quarter, while improved prices pushed up profits even further.
Peruvian fresh produce and aquaculture company Camposol recorded a whopping 253% jump in EBITDA for the second quarter of 2017, driven by greater volumes and better prices for avocados as well as stronger revenues from its shrimp business.
Avocado sales reached US$42.4 million for the period, out of a total revenue of US$70.4 million.
Blueberry sales were miniscule in comparison and actually declined year-on-year in the second quarter, but for the first half as a whole the category's volume was up 15.3%.
Blueberry prices were down 19.3% for the half but Camposol has reiterated they remain the most profitable product in the portfolio.
Overall Camposol Holding CEO Jorge Ramirez Rubio was optimistic.
"The Company's strategic decision to focus on fresh and healthy products and to offer a recognized value proposition directly to the retailers, along with a proper execution throughout all our value chain, is what is making possible to deliver these results," he said.
"We expect that with favorable market trends and a team highly focused on the strategy, we will continue strengthening Camposol as a world class company."
In terms of recent developments, the company also highlighted the opening of a new commercial office in Shanghai, China, as part of a strategy to develop new markets.
The group has also indicated good demand for all fresh produce in general, and for avocados and blueberries specifically in both the United States and Europe.
"The Company expects to continue its diversification strategy by mainly increasing the production capacity of blueberries, avocados and shrimp," Camposol said.
