Japan: Fukushima peach exports rise as contamination fears subside

Japanese peach exports from Fukushima to Asian markets have been recovering in the wake of the 2011 nuclear disaster, with the industry eager for remaining import bans to be lifted.

Among peaches exported to Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia last year, those produced in Fukushima Prefecture led the way for the second-year running, website Japan Times reported.

The local government said the area's peach shipments rose 57% year-on-year in 2017 to 48 metric tons (MT).

However, many Asian countries still have bans in place on Fukushima produce exports, and officials say they will continue urging the government to negotiate with the biggest customers of Japanese peaches, Hong Kong and Taiwan, to encourage them to lift their bans.

Thailand was the leading market for Fukushima peaches last year followed by Malaysia and Indonesia, the story reported.
