U.S.: Romaine-linked E. coli outbreak now affecting 29 states
A major outbreak in the U.S. of E. coli linked to Arizona-grown Romaine lettuce is now affecting 29 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The figure is four higher than the last update on May 2, will new illnesses reported in Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Texas.
Also since the last update, 28 more ill people have been reported, bringing the total to 149.
Sixty-four people out of 129 with available information have been hospitalized, including 17 who developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.
One death was reported from California, which was included in the May 2 update.
California remains the area most affected by the outbreak, with 30 illnesses reported.
This is the largest E. coli flare-up in the U.S. since 2006, when tainted spinach sickened 199 people across 26 states.
