Ecuador: Large cocaine haul found in Russia-bound bananas
A 354-kilogram haul of cocaine has been discovered hidden in a banana consignment at an Ecuadorian port, local publication El Comercio [in Spanish] reports.
The load was bound for Russia and was discovered at the Port of Guayaquil on July 21 by a National Police anti-drug unit.
During a routine inspection of a container of bananas, port staff reportedly became suspicious when they saw that the security seals did not match the container. Authorities then looked inside the container and found 354 brick-sized packets of the drug wrapped in green tape.
The consignment was due to be shipped to the Russian market - Ecuador's leading banana destination - passing first through the Belgian Port of Antwerp.
Police are investigating who is responsible for the haul.
