China opens for Panamanian pineapple exports
The Chinese market has opened for Panamanian pineapples, after the two countries signed phytosanitary export protocols during a recent visit to the Central American country by Chinese president Xi Jinping.
Panama's Agricultural Development Ministry (MIDA) said the agreement follows months of talks between the two sides.
Chinese authorities gave their market access approval in October, almost a year after a visit by inspectors in November 2017, it said in a statement.
Last November, local media La Prensa reported that seven pineapple producing Panamanian companies were evaluated by Chinese inspectors.
Xi Jinping visited Panama on December 2 and 3.
70% of pineapple production in the country comes from the Panama Oeste province, 22% from Chiriquí and 8% from Cocle.
