Chilean company Agroberries acquires BerryWorld Group
Agroberries, a Chilean company dedicated to the production, marketing, and distribution of berries, announced the acquisition of BerryWorld Group, the largest trader of berries in Europe.
With the acquisition, Agroberries will become the second largest berry trader in the world, surpassed only by the U.S. company Driscoll's.
The new company is reportedly valued at US$1.35 billion.
“This transaction is a transformational milestone in our 58-year history together. The integration with BerryWorld will increase our capabilities and allow our customers access to more exclusive berry varieties for the full year, as well as open doors to new markets for our growers, and create a robust platform to continue pushing organic and inorganic growth,” said Agroberries' co-founder and CEO, Jorge Varela.
Similarly, the co-head of Continental Grain Company (controller of 15% to 20% of Agroberries), commented that “given its diversified production base, the strength of its marketing platforms, and the high genetic and varietal quality of its programs, the combined company will continue to bring supermarkets and consumers the highest quality fruit in the four berry categories.
For his part, BerryWorld's co-founder and CEO, Adam Olins, noted that he found in Agroberries the ideal partners.
“After working together for some time, I am convinced that our organizations share common values, culture and commitment to sustainability. We will work together tirelessly to serve the evolving needs of consumers around the world,” he said.
Agroberries currently has plantations in different parts of the world: 700 hectares planted in Chile; 1,200 in Peru; 900 in Mexico; 80 in the United States; and 300 in Morocco.
In 2023, Agroberries acquired a 23% minority stake in BerryWorld. With the new transaction, the Chilean firm now controls 100% of the European company.
